If you see a donkey with badly overgrown hooves, such as Luke's in the above photo, please report it to the nearest humane society. This is gross neglect and abuse.

"Our eldest donkey at the Sanctuary, Alice, turned 52 this year (2004) and we just built her a fully enclosed stable lined with carpet for her through the cold winter months as she suffers from arthritis. But we have come across some great herbal remedies for her and she is trotting around like a youngster. She's only a little thing and such a darling treasure and gives lots of love in return for plenty of carrots"

"At this moment we have 341 donkeys in care which is 90% of the whole donkey population on Bonaire, the other 10 % must also be caught, but we need more time.
We brought the car accidants back from 120 a year ( 2005 ). This year there's only been 4 car accidents with donkeys. But still we cannot get enough support to buy food and medical care for our donkeys, too much donkey hate,  donkey lovers cannot imagine that it is so ."

Bonny Shah 1945-2004
Founder of DDS

Dharma Donkey Sanctuary, South Maharashtra State
www.dharmadonkeysanctuary.org
The DDS conducts health camps for donkeys twice a year. The donkey population around the area is over 5,000 within a radius of 45 km. Donkeys are used to transport agricultural produce and sand from the riverbeds. Earlier this year (Jan. 7/04), 2,355 donkeys were examined and treated. the owners are given training in proper donkey care, such as overloading and the ill effects of branding. All the donkeys are dewormed. To make a donation:
www.dharmadonkeysanctuary.org/helpdonkey.htm

Notes from the June 2002 camp:
"The camp was a huge success -  we treated over  2,000 donkeys brought by their owners... these are primitive village people with no education. They make very little money with their donkeys .. taking loads of pots, and other goods to villages that have literally no roads at all .. donkeys are their only way of getting merchandise, mail, etc...      Another exciting event was meeting the police men who had arrested 'kid-donkey nappers', stealing 24 donkeys headed for the infamous slaughter house in Andra Pradesh."

Wonderful Bonny Shah, founder of the Dharma Sanctuary, passed away on July 28/04. Our deepest sympathy to her family, and those involved with her wonderful projects. We are very sad. What an inspiration she is, proving that one person can make a difference in the world.
Kicking Donkey Products dedicated the 9th edition of its catalogue in memory of Bonny Shah

Namibia
The problem

"Our first project there is to help reduce
the number of donkeys involved in road accidents by giving them reflective ear tags which we developed."

The solution

Donkey Welfare of Namibia
Based out of the UK

www.donkeywelfare.com

"Donkey Welfare of Namibia can help save the lives of these donkeys (and the occupants of the vehicles which hit them) by making them more visible at night.  We do this by attaching a reflective tag to each of their ears. It costs just over £3 a donkey to tag them with reflective ear tags."

For a donation of $100 toward the balloon payment, your name will be placed on a permanent plaque. The drought has led to rising cost of hay. We are fencing 280 acres to allow donkeys to forage and developing their own source of water. "

SPANA
(Society for the Protection of Animals Abroad)
SPANA was founded 80 years ago to help prevent suffering to working animals, with a focus on donkeys and mules. Its mission is “to improve standards of animal care wherever the need arises”: this is amongst some of the poorest people of North and West Africa and the Middle East where people depend on their animals for transport and survival. SPANA operates 18 veterinary centres and 20 mobile clinics which currently treat over 300,000 animals each year. The charity has bases in Algeria, Ethiopia, Jordan, Mali, Mauritania, Morocco, Syria, and Tunisia.

For $450, you can buy a donkey and cart.

A donkey and a cart make a dependable team, providing critical help for widows and their children who make their living by transporting and selling firewood and other goods.
Or you can donate funds to buy a mule for $400

World Vision (U.S.A.)
For $400, you can buy a mule
Weight for weight, a mule is stronger than a horse — and lives much longer. Mules rarely become ill, can withstand extreme temperatures, and have tremendous stamina for pulling plows and getting work done on the farm. A sure-footed, trustworthy mule can help a family reap larger harvests and carry more produce to the market to sell.

Quotations

The first 2 quotes are thanks to Susan Churico, Bernville PA

"Many have forgotten this truth, but we must never forget it... we remain forever responsible for what we have tamed."
Antoine de Saint-Exupery
"If you have men who will exclude any of God's creatures from the shelter of compassion and pity, you will have men who will deal likewise with their fellow men."
St. Francis of Assisi
" If you talk to the animals, they will talk to you, and you will know them. If you do not talk to them, you will not know them. And what you do not know, you will fear, and what one fears, one will destroy."
Chief Dan George
